The game is set in a third-person perspective so the character model is visible. After every mission, the player's performance is graded into 3 categories - Ghost (mostly playing the mission in a stealthy manner), Panther (equally playing stealthy and aggressively), and Assault (with an emphasize on combat). Each kill, collected dead drop, completed objective, hacked blacklist laptop, target captured or enemy avoided awards the player experience points and/or money, which can then be used to buy new weapons, improve existing ones, or upgrade the Paladin and Sam's suit and equipment. The amount of experience gained depends on the difficulty level and the way the game is played - the stealthier the player was (while playing on a higher difficulty), the more they will be rewarded. There is voice integration with Xbox 360's Kinect peripheral, which allow players to say things to distract enemies and then attack. The player can also use the Kinect sensor to control the protagonist with their body instead of the Xbox 360 controller.
